ENCLOSURE
Extract from notes of evidence in Stanton's case taken on 26th August, 1837.
Tse Leung in cross examination by Stanton stated:-
"If there are Indian Constables on the beats round Wa Lane I have heard that they receive bribes. I will not be the man that distributed the bribes amongst the Indian Constables. I did not get 40 cents a day to distribute and pocket half of it. I know Ah Hing. He is a Tung Koon man like myself and a friend of mine. If Ah Hing said that I paid money to Indian Constables he would be telling lies.
I don't know who gave the money to the Indians. I know that bribes were paid to them. I won't know who paid them. Perhaps Long Chi paid them. Cheung Hing Lane did not pay money to Indians to secure Wa Lane. They both paid.
If Cheung Hing Lane paid money to a man he would go and get the contribution from Wa Lane."
